Depending on your location you may also be able to tune in over the air (OTA) local broadcast channels with an antenna plugged directly into your television.  This is advantageous if you can get a strong signal because it’s completely free and often provides a higher quality picture.  Cable companies have been compressing signals for a long time in order to pack more channels and services for transmission over co-axial cable.  This compression results in a lower quality picture.
